Crime & Public Safety

With the recent reports of crime incidents in the Midtown area, please be extra alert, without hesitation report any questionable activity to the police, and keep in touch with your neighbors about what’s going on on your block.

Simple safety tips:

1) Keep your porch lights on
2) Avoid walking alone
3) While walking, keep an eye in front & behind you & cross the street if you feel suspicious about someone approaching you

 Harrisburg Trash Ordinance

Just a reminder that all trash must be kept in a receptacle with a tight fitting lid. No trash or recycling is to be placed at the curb before 6:00pm the day before collection.

This ordinance is in place to help prevent loose and overflowing trash from littering the neighborhood, as well as to help prevent stagnant water issues and rodents.

Hopefully, many Engleton neighbors have planned to party with their neighbors! If you haven’t yet, it’s not too late to grab some stuff for the grill and create some fun.

Please note:  ECG is aware of a block party happening on N 3rd Street. From 4-8pm N 3rd Street from Harris to Hamilton Streets will be blocked off for the festivities. If you park on that street, please be aware of this. If any other blocks in Engleton have planned a block party, please contact engletoncommunity@gmail.com if you would like a notice of a street closing sent out.

During this meeting, the Act 47 Coordinator’s Team will hear and take note of public comments in regard to the Act 47 Plan adjustments.  If you have comments and/or suggestions on the Plan, you can submit them in writing that night or you can send them via email to: Act47Planinput@thenovakconsultinggroup.com

A Reminder from the City of Harrisburg about Trash Collection & Ordinance

Per a statement issued: “Citizens are reminded that all trash must be in a trash can with a lid and only placed at the curb the night before collection day.“ Starting August 1st, citations will be issued for violations of this ordinance.

The Engelton Community Group does its best to keep apprised of crime in our neighborhood. The most basic source of information is the Harrisburg Crime Blotter, which does not always elaborate on details of a recorded crime. Hence, the reason why sometimes, an ECG crime notice will be nothing more than a link to the report we find. 

If you are aware of a crime in the neighborhood, please send an email to engletoncommunity@gmail.com with as much of the following details as possible:

1) date and time of act

2) address or location of act

3) description of act, i.e. burglary, break-in, vandalism, assault

4) pertinent details such as description of perpetrators, weapons used, items stolen or vandalized

5) police response

 The Public Safety Advisory Committee

The Public Safety Advisory Committee (PSAC) is a group made up primarily of representatives from City-wide neighborhood/crime-watch groups.

The ultimate goal of PSAC is to communally address public safety issues across the city of Harrisburg by working with as many interested parties & persons as possible. 

Thus, PSAC needs to connect with existing neighborhood organizations that are not currently involved. Also, PSAC wants to connect with Harrisburg residents who do not have a crime-watch/neighborhood organization and would like to have help organizing one. 

While Engleton Community Group is involved in PSAC, please pass this message around to any of our neighbors of Engleton who are not. Please contact the PSAC at harrisburg.psac@gmail.com.

 The 911 DispatchCenterwill move from the City to DauphinCountycontrol on June 26th 2011.   

At that time, all emergency calls should be made to 9-1-1. 

255.3131 will no longer be used for emergency calls.

Crime Watch Tips

If you have unfortunately been the victim of crime or witness one of our city’s criminals in action, it is likely that the responding police will ask for a description. 

Here’s a guide for things that may help the police find a suspect shortly after a crime has been committed. 

It is of course important to contact the police and other emergency services as quickly as possible and once you think that you are safe. 

Sex:  Usually only two options

Race:  White, Black, Hispanic, Asian

Direction of Travel:  Last known location and direction of travel

Age:  Attempt to narrow to a 5 year range

Height:  Reference the area around a suspect. For example, doors in a house are usually between 6’5” and 6’8”

Build:  Slim, medium or large. If you are in Starbucks then you can use tall, grande or venti.

Posture:  Bent, straight, lopsided

Hair:  Color, length, parts, braids, style, clean or dirty, hairline (balding)

Face:  Complexion (light to dark), shape (square, round, rectangular, full, narrow) forehead, (low, high, wide, narrow, receding, bulging), eyebrows (bushy, thin, straight, arched, unibrow), nose (straight, bent, pointed, narrow, wide), chin (round, square, pointed, jutting, receding, double), facial hair (beard, mustache, full, thin,) ears (size, shape, close to head or protruding)

Eyes:  Color, size, shape, differences between the two

Gait:  Speed, limp, length of stride

Dress:  A person’s dress can easily be changed but is very helpful to police searching an area shortly after a crime. Attempt to observe from head to toe- hat, shirt/jacket/hoody, pants/shorts, socks, shoes

Carrying:  Anything the person has with them including bags, backpack, children

Distinguishing Features:  Anything that makes the suspect different or stand out in a crowd

Reminds Me Of:  If the criminal looks like a well known person use this to describe them.

Weapons:  Details like color of a gun, how the weapon was displayed

Vehicle:  Make, model, color, license plate, number of occupants, direction of travel, sounds (music, exhaust)
